Pilates
Pilates is a comprehensive, sophisticated system with proper sequencing, progression, flow, levels, order and transitions.
[It] is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way your work. You will develop muscular power with corresponding endurance, ability to perform arduous duties, to play strenuous games, to walk, run, or travel for long distances without undue body fatigue or mental strain.
Through the study of Pilates you will:
- improve posture and alignment
- increase strength and flexibility
- strengthen your core (stomach and back)
- simultaneously improve posture, stability and alignment
- prevent injury
- enhance mental awareness by connecting the body with the breath
- learn how to move efficiently
I am available for individual and group sessions, and currently teach mat and springboard classes at Melt Massage and Body Work in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Pilates Exercises
Mat
The classic Pilates exercises are done on the mat, using your own body weight as resistance. The focus of Pilates is the “powerhouse,” or core (abdominals and back), and strength from the center reaches outward and provides a plethora of health benefits from a longer and more flexible spine to a lean and toned physique. There is a specific breathing technique that corresponds with the exercises, which forces you to concentrate and expands your awareness of your body and mind together. I currently teach Mat classes at Melt Massage and Bodywork in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and am available for private, duet and small group instruction.
Reformer
The Reformer looks like a single bed frame with a sliding carriage and adjustable springs to regulate tension and resistance. Many different core-building Pilates exercises are done on the reformer to promote length, strength, flexibility, and balance. The resistance of the springs offers more than what you get with your body weight alone. The multiple attachments of the reformer allow you to move through your full range of motion, which you might not be able to do on your own. Therefore, you can dial back your workouts if you find the mat exercises too challenging, or push yourself to go beyond what you can do on the mat if you want something more intense. This allows you to work to your level and progress appropriately. I am available to teach private reformer sessions.
Springboard
The Springboard is a space-saving version of the Cadillac, both which are grouped in Pilates as Towers. The majority of tower exercises focus on one area of the body at a time, making it easier to target specific muscle groups. The towers offer you more stability than the reformer, but still provide springs for extra resistance. Through the use of the roll-down bar and pull-through bar, towers also specialize in stretching and releasing tension. I currently teach Springboard classes at Melt Massage and Bodywork in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and am available to teach private Cadillac and Springboard sessions, as well as small group instruction on the Springboard.
Cadillac
The Cadillac enables you to tone almost every kind of muscle group in their bodies. It has additional features for more detailed Pilates work, including a trapeze, which allows you to work against gravity, working the wrists, ankles and upper and lower body muscles, while providing cardio-vascular and circulatory benefits.
